I believe this is one of the elements that is missing from the mental models of many large organizations that did not come from a technology background. Over the next several weeks, we will be releasing excerpts of The Unicorn Project… Often, that is an enlisted person. There were so many recorded instances of engines being put in backward, cars missing steering wheels, and cars being towed off the assembly line because they would not start. This was because the company believed that you would be jeopardizing the daily production quotas. Likewise, in The Unicorn Project, you refer to five ideals. We used to joke that this conference was for horses by the horses, no unicorns allowed. What General McChrystal questions is how do you change your organization so that you can push decision-making down to the lowest possible level so they are being made by the people doing the work? In The Phoenix Project, we used the constructs of the Three Ways and Four Types of Work to frame some of the important concepts in the book. High: So many of the rising trends now are about having permeable barriers between silos of the organizations such that there is better collaboration across the enterprise.
